Aim
1. What persuasive techniques does Jonathan Edwards use in his speech?

Launch: What lasting influence do you think the Plymouth and Jamestown settlers have had
on America? (In other words, what values have they passed on that are still valued today?) Do you think it has been a positive or a negative influence? Explain.

Launch: Have you ever lost someone close to you? What did you feel at the time? If not, how might you feel if you lost someone you love?

2. Why do we study Shakespeare and why do we still read a 400+ year old play?

Homework: Finish personal essay draft if you have not done so already.

2. What is figurative language?

Launch: Read the poem "It sifts from Leaden Sieves" in chapter 5 (somewhere around page 72) and discuss its use of metaphor.
