Aim
1. Based on their writing, what can you tell about the values and beliefs of the Plymouth settlers?

Launch: Can you imagine any situation in which you would be willing to move away from the home you've always known, leaving your friends and maybe even your family behind? Explain what kind of a situation that might be.

2. Discuss launch.
3. Read the excerpt from Of Plymouth Plantation and discuss.
4. Respond: What values did the Plymouth settlers have? How is this piece of writing "selling" Plymouth? Who might the audience be?

Homework: Independent Reading.

Aim
1. How do authors reveal their personality and "voice" through the personal essay?

Launch: When you get a phone call, how do you recognize the person you're talking to? When you read a note someone has left for you, how can you tell who it's from? (Don't just state the obvious, like, "Their name is on it.")

2. Discuss launch.
3. Read sample essay and identify "voice."
4. Read poems of identity.
5. Begin working on your own poem of identity.

Homework: Indpendent reading.

1. What are the requirements for the long form?

Launch: Skim through the first few chapters of Sound & Sense to generate our next vocabulary list.

1. Define words.
2. Continue working on sample long form.
3. Discuss chapter 3 of Sound & Sense.

Homework: Finish chapter 3 if we do not have time in class. Finish this week's essay from chapter 2. Due tomorrow.
