1. How is a speech different from other types of writing?
Launch: What sorts of "tricks" or techniques do you use to try to convince your friends of something, particularly something they don't want to do or something they don't believe is true?
Agenda
1. Discuss launch (i.e. persuasion techniques).
2. Jamestown/Plymouth debate.
3. Work on Colony Project.
Homework: Independent reading.

Aim
1. What techniques do good personal essay writers use?
Launch: Since writing the first draft of your personal essay, what new ideas have you gotten for it? In what ways can you change it for the better? What things about it would you like to keep the same?
Agenda
1. Meet briefly with your group from yesterday. Make sure you have a copy of the "best" essay and the answers to the questions.
2. Mix groups. Present your "best" essay and your answers to the new group.
3. As a group, choose the best essay out of those presented and prepare to explain to the class why your group believes that one is the best.
Homework: Indpendent reading.

Launch: Read one of the articles about Sophocles. Take notes.

1. Discuss chapter 4 of Sound & Sense.
2. Brainstorm for longform essay on Sophocles.
3. Begin generating thesis statements for each section of the longform.
4. Disuss independent reading assignment.
Homework: Work on this week's essay. Study for vocab quiz.
